Our Second Sailing Season was onboard our first boat, Dream On, a Beneteau Oceanis 430

Our plan to travel further afield to the British Virgin Islands during 2005/2006 was scuppered by transmission failure in Norfolk in November 2005. This was followed by a prolonged installation of new engine and transmission, then some teething problems with the new installation. We finally left the USA from Fort Lauderdale, Florida on 1st April 2006.

During the short season we explored the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, returning to The Bahamas via the remote Hogsty Reef and Crooked Island. Simon joined us in Nassau for a weeks sailing in the Exumas.

15 to 20 July 2006   Brunswick, Georgia   Sailed Dream On back into Brunswick Landing Marina for storage during the summer 2006 hurricane season before driving to Toronto and flying back to UK.
23 June  to 15 July 2006   Cape Canaveral

Cape Canaveral seemed a good choice of entry to the USA. An easy, though busy, entry channel. A Customs port of entry, and a marina that could haul the boat. Little did we know we would be there for three weeks! A Shuttle launch from Cape Canaveral on July 4th was an unexpected benefit.

20 to 22 June  2006   Back to USA   A 48 hour trip from Nassau to Port Canaveral, with a real weather mixture from calm seas and low wind to a roller coaster ride up the (rough) Gulf Stream.
11 to 18 June 2006   Simon's visit   Iza's son Simon arrives in Nassau on 11th June for a week. A quick run south again to The Exumas, returning to Nassau on 17th. Simon flew out of Nassau on 18 June.
7 to 10 June 2006   George Town to Nassau   After 3 days in George Town awaiting some nasty weather, we headed north, via Big Farmer's Cay, Norman's Cay and Athol Island to Nassau. Squalls followed us all the way, with a real nasty catching us at Big Farmer's Cay.
30 May to 4 June 2006   Clarence Town, Long Island, Conception and George Town   Motored from Landrail Point on Crooked Island to Clarence Town on Long Island. Change of intended route due to a problem with our propeller. Two nights in Clarence Town then sailed to Conception Island. Planned a week at Conception but with bad weather looming we moved to George Town on Great Exuma Island.
10 to 30 May 2006   Hogsty Reef & Crooked island area   Overnight sail from Turks & Caicos to Hogsty Reef, a coral atoll in SE Bahamas. Three nights at Hogsty Reef then on to the Crooked Island area.
30 April to 10 May   Turks & Caicos Islands   First visit to the Turks & Caicos Islands. Visited Providenciales and West Caicos. Good diving. See our diving page.
31 March to 30 April 2006   Bahamas 2006 southbound   Crossing the Gulf Stream from Fort Lauderdale to the Bahama Banks and on to Nassau and the Exumas. A slow run through the Exumas to George Town. Then positioned out to Conception for a 48 hour run to the Turks & Caicos Islands.
2 January to 20 March 2006   ICW Charleston, SC to Fort Lauderdale, Florida   Charleston to Brunswick, with increasing engine temperatures, low batteries and a suspect new transmission.

An arrival to be remembered in Brunswick and seven weeks to sort it out.

Outside run Brunswick to Fort Pierce. Visit to Vero Beach, then south on the ICW to Fort Lauderdale.

22 December to 31 December   ICW Norfolk to Charleston, SC.   A cold, cold journey down the ICW. Ice on the creeks, ice inside the cabin. Christmas Day in Beaufort, NC, New Year in Charleston, SC.
22 November to 22 December   Portsmouth, Virginia   New engine and transmission required! Weather cooling down. Christmas approaching!
19 to 21 November 2006 Down Chesapeake Bay to Norfolk, Virginia Our journey from St. Mary's River, off the Potomac to our adrenalin rush arrival in Norfolk.
6 to 18 November 2006 The Potomac River & Washington DC. South from Annapolis, then into the Potomac River and on to Washington DC, 92 miles upriver and return. A visit to Mount Vernon 15 miles south of Washington.
26 October to 6 November 2006   Annapolis, Maryland   Crossed Chesapeake  Bay to Annapolis. Carol & Bob left us in Annapolis. We remained in Annapolis to upgrade our alternator and for Iza's ribs to repair from a fall.
23 to 24 October 2006   Chestertown to St Michael's   Motored down the Chester River, through Kent Island Narrows to St. Michaels. Two nights at anchor in very wet, rough conditions, before crossing the Chesapeake to Annapolis.
10  to 22 October 2005   Chestertown, Maryland   We returned to Chestertown and Dream On, to prepare her for our second season of cruising. Launched Dream On on 21 October. Joined by Geoff's sister and brother-in-law, Carol & Bob.
